IT'S a BOY!

I'm proud to announce that early this morning my beautiful wife gave birth at home to a strong 9.3lb boy! I'm going to have to have a sale to celebrate! ( and the fact I may be up at night so might as well get some orders in too) Dean Jolly RKC NZ

A few nights ago, I was laying awake just after midnight when I heard my fifteen year old son pad quietly down stairs. He didn't come back up. I figured something was up. Checked the whole house. No sign. Checked the garage. Bingo. My son had "borrowed" his mother's car for a late nite assignation with an anonymous hottie. On a school night. Aaaargh! I was glad I had my qigong relaxation skills at hand to deal with the resulting scenario, with his eventual return at around 2:30pm... His imaginative version of why he had disappeared would have made the most seasoned Hollywood scriptwriter proud. In fact I think I will write one of my next blogs about it. Dean, you have lots to look forward to! As we battle-hardened parents like to say, your life will never be the same. One of the best things for keeping my son reasonably on track has been achieving a black belt in Soo Bahk Do, followed by his current study of Bagua. I am working on him to take up Chen Style Tai Chi right now. And yes, he intermittently practices with kettlebells...

Lung test

Years ago I read the book 'Tuesdays with Morrie', a chronicle of a dying mans last days and read about this pulmonary test Morrie self administered to assess his lung function. You inhale slowly for two seconds and then exhale slowly for three. You then plug your nose and hold your breath. I test this occasionally on the way to work ( not much traffic at 5 am)and wondered what values others get.I try to "suprise" myself and just administer it rather than "prepare" with deeper than usual breathing. my times vary from 35 seconds to 60 seconds ( today, a pr btw, lol!). I try to really blow out on the three seconds exhale.what numbers are you guys getting? Also Steve Maxwells pulse test rocks.I did that regularly when I was running and cycling and it works great. Have to give that a go again too. Rif

My competetive nature got the best of me and I just gave this a shot (haven't tried this test before). Clocked 65 seconds and started not to like the experience or color of my face anymore, so stopped. On a slow exhale, three seconds for me still left a good amount of air in my lungs -- not that you would want to over expel anyway. What was the reasoning behind this particular timing? A full slow inhale for me takes about ten seconds and an exhale about the same period, so I am little confused about intended volumes.

Where did the name Dragon Door come from? (n.m.)

Answer

John Du Cane: May 16 2006

I founded Dragon Door fifteen years ago to publish resources on Tai Chi and Qigong. Dragon Door is a translation of Lung Men, also translating as Dragon Gate. Dragon Door is one of the major "streams" in Daoism. Dragons at the door to enlightenment... When Pavel became a Dragon Door author about eight years ago, the emphasis changed to where we have arrived at now.

I do agree with Ross's article - a conditioning program is where you work on strength and other "weak" links - you then transfer that to your goal activity through skill practice.
