John DuCane kept me from getting Gongd w/ Qigong

I had the pleasure of meeting John in june, at the RKC workshop. He's not a big and intimidating individual, as a matter of fact he was very soft spoken and gentle but yet the hardest to forget out of everybody. He's just different...though he's soft spoken and gentle there is a balance and strength in him thats hard to put words to, and even harder to forget. On the third day of the RKC workshop I still had not passed my rep test (32reps) ("which was agonizing since I was doing about 40 hardstyle snatches at home") I THOUGHT since I was too tired to let nervous anxiety steal my focus, that Id be good to go...But once they said to get on the floor to start the day, those old feelings were back, and strong as ever. We started the day with (Qigong), after which I was very focused and calm. We all went immediately out to the field and I completed my reps in front of Steve Cotter. I felt I could have went a couple more too. For aboout two weeks this anxiety was killing me and was the biggest contributing factor in failing the test. It got worse & worse until John put my energy in check and I was able to focus on the task at hand. Thanks John I hope I get a chance to meet you again......Jeremiah

Jeremiah, That's to great to hear about the qigong helping you pass the test. I talk a lot in my qigong classes about using consciousness to achieve something physical and this is a classic example. I enjoyed connecting with you at the meet and greet on Thursday evening and watching your determination through the cert. Look forward to seeing you again in the future!

Kettlebells and Whiplash Prevention/Treatment - My Story

Comrades, Monday afternoon, I was involved in a rear-end collision while on my way home to train. A young woman in a mini-van, travelling 25 mph, hit me. I was at a dead stop in my little Subaru. As for my vehicle, bumper damage only and some damage to the drivers seat recline mechanism. I was really thrown around. Initially, I was a little disoriented and began having intermittent sharp pain in my neck and rhomboid region. I drove home and said to myself "to hell with it I'm gonna train anyway". My workout that afternoon... - Dragon Twisting (per Steve Cotter) - 2 53# KBs multiple sets of 8 (4 per side) - H2H High pull lunge (KB locked out overhead)- 1 pood 5 x 10 each side - 15 min. of assorted H2H with 26# including helicopter spins, uppercuts etc. Immediately post-workout I had surprising pain relief. I awoke the following morning with full neck motion and no pain. I haven't had a hint of pain since. Lessons... 1) KB training promotes considerable neck and shoulder stability for help in avoiding neck injury and 2) there is some pain modulating effect from the training. I work as a physical therapist and it's amazing to me how patients can demonstrate perceived disability that is out of proportion to their actual motor vehicle accident (even when not motivated by financial gain). Patients should be encouraged to get active early post-MVA and to train hard! RKCs should be encouraged to promote their services to MDs, chiropractors and physical therapists. Talk to these folks about the profound neck stability achieved through kettlebell training. Have a great weekend all, Steve McNamara, PT, RKC

The full story is in one of my qigong blog postings. The reason I believe my vertebrae were affected so much was because, after being hit one time by the SUV, I had turned round to see what had hit me... and the gentleman came at me a second time, slamming in just as hard, while my neck was twisted round and back. Not a good thing...

three of my top cervical vertebrae were put out of whack in a major way. In my case I did a ton of qigong after the accident, which also helped immensely. I think I will use your story some time to illustrate Kb rehab benefits!

Question for Mr. Du Cane

I live in Canada. In the the States you have Barnes and Noble,in Canada we have Chapters. The chain is Nation wide yet does not carry any of your materials. My question is,are you aware of Chapters and if so do you have any plans to get them to stock your books, videos etc. Thanks Paulm

Answer

John Du Cane: July 21 2005

Our books are not published to be sold in bookstores, so we do not pursue these avenues more than slightly (represents about five percent of our business max). Unfortunately "the trade" operates on an antiquated business model based in the Depression era. Average returns in the industry run at over 30% and you have to wait about four months to get paid on a sale. It's just not worth it!

The qigong process I told Pam about that would help with sleep is lengthy to explain and best done in person. However, I may expalin it in an upcoming qigong blog (see the homepage). The blogs are new every Monday.

Question for John Du Cane

Hi, may I know how long does you takes to perform the whole "five animal frolics"?When I perform till the first of monkey frolics, I am in whole sweat. It seems it takes a long time to perform all.Is there any best time to practise? What is the difference between the five animal frolics and the video depicting the five animals? Is there different exercises in the video? Thanks for your answer

Answer

John Du Cane: July 30 2005

It varies enormously, depending on how many repetitions of each movement. Usually to do the whole Animal Frolics will take about an hour, but it would be possible to do a version in about thirty minutes. Best times are generally first thing in the morning and early evening. There is no difference in content between the videos and the manual/book.

about integrating all five animal frolics into a single routine over time?
