Matt,
My bending progression went something like this
40d nail
blue nail
cut blue nail
60d nail
Grade 5 bolt
Cut grade 5 bolt
Grade 8 bolt
Red nail
Made a switch to double overhand when I got to the Grade 8 bolt.
had bent double underhand before that.

another beginner question

I've been using the KB's for about 6 weeks. I train at home in my backyard. Now that the cold and wet weather is coming I'm wondering what would be best to do when it's too wet or raining outside. My wife would have a coniption if saw me doing swings in the den. Does it hurt to save the swings/cleans/etc for when I train outside? What kind of exercise is a good substitute for a swing or clean?

Look into some squared of dojo matting that you could set down when you swing the KB around and then tuck in a closet afterwards.

Thanks Brad - I am not catching the Travis Green shot - a little clue might help.
But yes I am training again - The past year has been a HUGE transition year and finally over the past few months I am feeling back on track and ready to hit it hard again.
And I do have to say that since I am training again - we just might be on to something with this Kettlebell thing ;)

Guys,
I was just wondering if a BEAR/PTP mix routine would be viable. BEAR with me for a minute (heh-heh). Letīs say a trainee was to do a bench press routine as follows (Iīm gonna use 100lbs as load for the sake of simplicity):
Mon: BEAR/PTP Mix
1x5 @ 100lbs (your standart PTP money set)
1x5 @ 90lbs (down to 90%)
nx5 @ 80lbs (the BEAR 80% volume set, where n = number of sets without losing form)
Tue: PTP set
1x5 @ 105lbs
1x5 @ 95lbs
Wed: BEAR/PTP Mix
1x5 @ 110lbs
1x5 @ 100lbs
nx5 @ 90lbs (n may be lower than the one achieved on Mon, but its the same principle)
Thu: PTP set
1x5 @ 115lbs
1x5 @ 105lbs
Fri: PTP set (end-cycle. Too heavy to attempt mixing it with BEAR)
1x5 @ 120lbs
1x5 @ 110lbs
Could it work? Would it be possible to have (at least to an extent) the benefits of both routines? Just thinking out loud...

I would not combine the two - stick with the bear if size is the goal - go with PTP for more strength oriented work.
The volume from the bear demands rest days to allow for recovery.

Volume routines require some adjustment if you are not used to them - so you may need to gradually build the volume to the bear levels.
Take a back off week as recommended and then build the volume over the next 2-3 weeks.

Greetings and a Quick Question

Hello everyone,
First of all I just wanted to introduce myself and say hello. This is a great forum and I've been lurking for a little while. I've learned alot from the posts and responses on this board :)
Anyway, I have a question:
I'm working away from home right now and I've been doing mostly cals and exercises from Naked Warrior. It's going great, BUT I also brought along my Captains of Crush Gripper #1 cuz my main goal is to be able to get 20 or so clean repetitions by the time I go back home (in about 10 weeks). Right now I can typically get 5 closes with my right hand and I can get 3 or 4 closes w/ the left hand.
I read "Crush Grip: A Forced Rep Approach" by Martin Farrell, and he recommends training with the #2 grip and doing negatives. I don't have a #2 gripper, so I was wondering if there's a way to train effectively without it.
For the last 2 weeks I've been trying GTG with a single rep 4 or 5 times per day but it doesn't seem to be working. On my recent attempts at PR's, I still hit 4 with my left hand and 5 with the right. Should I be doing more sets? More reps? Should I focus on negatives?
Do any of you have experience with bringing up your grip on a COC Gripper? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Since your goal with the gripper is endurance based and not working on a harder gripper - the GTG should work very well if you hit the right # of reps per set - you can even alernate the rep count during the day - do three reps for the first set , two reps for the second set, then just do a single for the third set - then start the rotation over.
Rotate your volume during the week - whatever your total volume is on Monday - do 60% of that on Tues (vary the reps per set), back to 100% on Wednesday - then 50% of that on Thursday - maybe even a day off on Friday - then hit it hard on Saturday - day off on Sunday - then repeat the cycle based of off the total reps on Saturday.
Timed overcrushes can also help - close the #1 and continue to try to close it further - really crush the handles together for 5 - 10 seconds or so - you could do just two - three sets of this during the day as one of your days during the week.
Keep us posted and remember that if you hit a point of fatique during the day - end that day's GTG or reduce the volume by a lot.
