DC Maxwell takes number three in the BJJ World Championships !!
|
|
Please forgive me, but I am going to brag a bit about my wife,DC. I am just so proud of her. Because I train and compete in BJJ, I know what is involved and how hard it is to win at the world level. She traveled to Rio de Janeiro to compete in the Mundials (World Championships). She is one of three American women to recieve a black belt in Brazilian Jiujitsu. Besides being a business owner/operator (Maxercise/Steve Maxwell Strength and Conditioning), she is also a mother of two. Somehow, she managed to train while taking care of her family and working full time and place in the top three in the world in her martial art. She trained very hard when she could and dropped down to the super feather weight division by strict dieting. Her victory in the quarter finals and her fight in the semi's got her a live interview on Brazilian TV. The most amazing thing thing is that she is 50 years old. Let her example be an inspiration to us all. There are no excuses. Everyone is capable of great things.

DC,
You are an ispiration not because of your age (although your accomplishments at your level are even more impressive because of it),
but because of your level of dedication and achievment both on and off of the mat - and you manage to succeed even while having to manage Steve M.
;)
Congrats

Form your own opinions. He was a nice guy at the Certification in February of 2002. He gave me good advice on buy skateboards for my boys.

Thank you for the comments - as one of the instructors it means a great deal.
I agree with your analogies of different skills you "pick up" quickly but spend a lifetime mastering.
There is a difference between swinging the KB and knowing how to perform the swing. Just as there is a difference between throwing a punch and knowing how to throw a punch.
I was at the Feb 2002 cert and Davies did not instruct - he attended, participated and shared some of his techniques.

Great circuit workout at Iron Core this morning
|
|
I am in SD for a couple weeks finishing out some training, so I decided to catch the KB basic workout this morning at Iron Core La Jolla. It was a great workout, really got my pulse up and a good sweat. Sara and Bret have a great gym. Very friendly and knowlegable, if you are ever in SD do yourself a favor and check it out.

Jon,
Look for some new products coming from the BOSU people in the near future.
The warm up is top secret....;)
Not so much - here is a sample (Steve Cotter posted something similar a few weeks back)
Stand on BOSU (both feet)
Rotate head side to side x 10
up and down x 10
squat x 5
now close your eyes and do the same three begin
Single leg stance x 1 min x 2 each leg
BOSU hops (one foot on - one foot off load up and jump to the other side of the bosu so the other foot is now on top - load up and back to the other side) x 30
Flip the bosu over to the dome side down and do pushups x 30 sec.
Flip back over and do 25 of the Castrogiovanni squat and lay back ab things.
Should have you ready to go
Not sure about NC for the coming year - we will see.
Take care
Brett

Those Interested in How Research is Performed...
|
|
I just had the opportunity to interview a long time friend of mine about the inside dealings of strength training research. He did his Master's at Ball State with a lot of Kraemer's people and now getting his PhD in metabolism. I have to say the whole process of performing research and the motives behind it were eye opening to say the least!! If people are interested they can read it at my website after the sign-up for the free newsletter.
Just go to www.joshhenkin.com. I would love to hear people's opinions. It definately makes you think about how strongly we take what the research tells us.

I haven't read the article yet - but I am on the way over to your site to read and sign up -
Research is one of the things that I am most wary of and listen the least to - threats to internal and external validity - statistical measures being changed to find significance etc....
BTW - How is the gripping coming?

Kettlebell DVDs for Beginners
|
|
I am interested in using kettlebells to get in shape and lose weight. If I was going to buy one DVD, which one would everyone recommend and why? I know Pavel's is probably a good place to start. However, I am wondering whether Brett Jones' new DVD, Mahler's DVD or book, Lisa's new book or Steve Cotter's DVDs would be more comprehensive for a total beginner. Brett Jones' DVDs in particular look like a good comprehensive beginning point. I am afraid some of the others may be too advanced for me. Also, what size kettlebell should I start with? I am 47, a little over six feet, about 40lbs overweight but generally strong for my size. Thank you for any advice you are willing to give.

Having both would be ideal as stated - if you have to choose one - choose based on how you learn - the video will give you excellent visual tools to be able to reference and see correct form, incorrect form and the corrections. The book will give you pictures to examine and written cues for good and bad form as well as some suggested routines.
Best of luck in your training and let us know if you need anything further.
