Yet another example fo the "what the hell" effects...

I have never been a big fan of arm wrestling, i have really long limbs and it seemed that my leverage was poor (same reason i think i am a great DL'er) anyways, for 6 months the only thing i did was DL/Side press and TGU, worked up to 535 for doubles, 110 doubles, and a 155 max TGU. started with KBs in Feb once i returned to Japan. With my KBs, all i do is the bent press, swings, some pressing, and a lot of H2H drills. Any ways. One of Okinawas top ranked Arm wrestlers is in our unit, Nakazato. he is 192 pounds, 17 inch arms, which for a 5'6 asian looks huge. We arm wrestled two days ago, first time i have in years. Pinned him in 15 seconds. My elbow and shoulder was amazing sore yesterday and today, but it was unbelieveable. Tried out again today with a buddy of mine, he is really big meat head, loves to curl ect. Pinned him. What the hell? So now, i am getting really interested in Arm wrestling. Where can i find some specific training for it? recommendations on technique?

Com. Adam, this is the firs time I see something like this happen. You obviously have a great talent for AW. And long forearms are NOT a detriment. Ask the guy who beat to hook you up with more local arm benders. If he can't e-mail Mary McConnaughey, a world champ and a great lady. She is in Iowa but she knows everyone. armwrestle@aol.com Until then -no AW. Too dangerous w/o proper instruction.

Muscle ups on the pull up bar

I heard of this exercise yesterday and I donīt know if the technique to do them is the correct. Can be this??: With an overhand grip i do the pull up and when i reach the top position i change my elbows and do a dip but it is on the pull ups bar. Is this technique?? What muscles develop this exercise?? What is a good number of reps for this?? Thanks

Answer

Com. bullet, don't do this as an exercise, too hard to the shoulder when volume is high. The straight bar muscle-out is a skill for the obstacle course. First build up reserve of pullup strength, e.g. 32kgx5. At the same time practice dips on one bar (the finish position). Then try the MO, at first leading with one elbow, later both at once. When you have mastered it occasionally refresh teh skill with a few reps and keep up your pullup strength. The pullups must be tactical, neck or even chest to the bar.

Pavel: Question about psychology book?

I remember a while back you saying you might print a psychology book. Seeing that Dragondoor hasn't published a real recent book from you, do you all plan on publishing that psychology book you were talking about in an earlier time? It would be a great book to read, I think a lot of people here would love to read about a subject like that. Thanks in advance for any answer you may be able to give.

Answer

Pavel Tsatsouline: May 13 2006

Com. Comanch09, Dr. Judd Biasiotto and I considered writing it but did not get around it to it. It would have been 90% his book with some Russian research I would add as psychology is not my specialty. Just do a search and get Dr. Judd's out of print books such as Psyching. As for my books, a new one is at the printers' right now. It will be out this month.

Pavel. what do you think about the west side barbell sytem?

I was wondering what you thought about the westside barbell conjugated periodization system. I'm looking for both size and strength. What do you think.

Answer

Pavel Tsatsouline: May 16 2006

Com. eric55, the WSB system has proved its worth. Even in raw PL; Com. Donnie Thompson, RKC put up big numbers in a recent raw meet in New England. If you choose to follow WSB make sure to follow it to the letter, don't try to 'improve' it. Read all of Louie Simmons' articles on westside-barbell.com, read the PL articles on elitefitness.com, and start training under a PLer experienced in WSB. It is a very sophisticated system and you need expert supervision.

Superstrength programs? + a question on bulking

I'm talking about the Smolov (Junior, too)... basically things similar to that. Just wondering what ones there are (links are appreciated). And the expansion on this post... is that most programs which look like they'd make you freakily strong (ex. Smolov) make you big! What about comrades looking for "superstrength without bulk"? This irritates me... as I'd love to take on the Smolov (in a few years, heh), but I don't want to get any bigger. So is there a way to avoid this? I'm aware I could just limit my caloric intake, but I'm presuming the reason people eat so much on those sorts of programs is because they need to, at least partially. Is that right? So... does that really work (limiting intake)? My next question is... is it possible to lose muscle, while gaining strength? (ie. for whatever happens after the Smolov?) And finally... can the Smolov be done with deadlift? If anyone's done it, what results did you get? Thanks, - Bleedthrough.

Answer

Pavel Tsatsouline: May 30 2006

Com. Bleedthrough, you will not survive Smolov w/o eating big. Do PTP or the low volume programs in BB: Russian sets, 5x5x5, PTP/ladder. Com. Charles Stocking (read his articles in back issues of HS) had put some high school kids on the DL Smolov and they went from 315 to 385 on average. Keep in mind, they are young and have great recovery and they have a professional coach who watched their form like a hawk. Don't do it yourself.
