Lean meats, low glycemic fruits and veggies represent the ideal diet. While I do not eat meat for (for my spiritual beliefs)I model a meat diet in terms of getting a lot of protein, good amount of fat and moderate amout of healthy carbs. Startches should be a minimum to zero part of your diet.

which leads to fat storage. Not a big deal if you have starches from time to time, but I would not focus on making them a staple of one's diet.

Deadlifts on the morning. WEAK!
|
|
I started another cycle of Pavel/Simmons DL singles with my first day yesterday. Pulled 142.5kg for 15 singles nice and easy.
Decided to do my DL before work so did some joint mobilty work and a couple sets of KB swings to warm up. Loaded the bar with 155kg and it wouldnt come off the floor! Has anyone experienced this before?
I didnt eat anything but did mix up a protein shake which i sipped during my warm up.
I didnt expect this at all. My best DL is 220kg so this should have been quite easy!
Any ideas?

I just got the Bulldog from the exsceelent sale by DD. I was thinking of leaving it at my office and GTG with it. I was thinking of doing one set of one rep 4-5 times a day with a C&P first.
If I do this 5 days/ week when should I switch it up with a different exercise?
When should I notice some results? A month or two?

that men should be using period. 35s are okay for learning form, then it is time to get serious and step up. 53s should be the minimum goal for men and 70s should not be out of reach.
Renegade Rows with light bells (35s or less do not work very well and are a good way to loose a finger nail with the bells flip over). Alternating bent over rows are a better option. Or use a big bell for the stabilier, and a small bell to pull with and then switch sides. Example, have the none working arm on a 53lb bell and the working arm on a 26lb bell and then switch sides. If you choose to use small bells, keep the bells close together and the legs fairly wide for added stability.

Mixing HOC and Tabata
|
|
Is this possible, or is it down and simple insane? I was planning to do 3 sets of HOC (10 snatches, 10 C&J, 10 1-arm swings with a minute of rope in between each), then taking a 2 minute brake or something around that and going for 8 minutes of Tabata (or Tabita, can´t remember all that well). BTW, this is would be done 1-2 times a week, I´m focusing on strength this month and these two workouts would be to keep the conditioning or improving it a bit.

However, have you ever done a Tabata workout before? A lot harder in practice than it looks on paper. Try doing both on separate days first before you execute any combinations. No doubt it will work well if you can handle it.

Especially when you look middle eastern like me ;-)(hopefull my Hindu Chain helps out) One thing I do is have kettlebells on both coasts. I have some at my parents house in VA and some here in LA. I do a lot of east coast seminars and want some bells to train with on the east coast.
The best products for working out on the road are Lifeline's TNT cable fo the upper body and the portable power jumper for the lower body. Great compliment to KB trianing. Especially the TNT Mil presses for improving KB presses.

T and GH level effects
|
|
I had a question about the effects of training and adjusting your lifestyle to maximize your levels of testosterone and growth hormone.
I have heard using steraroids and other artificial methods of doing this gives you increased acne and changes your facial features (example pronounced jaw) as well as other more serious side effects such as with your reproductive organs.
Do any of these changes take place if the increased hormone levels come from increased sleep, optimal training, and other things that have been proposed.
Thanks,

I'm going to LA for the first time in about 2 weeks (specifically, Marina del Rey), and I have an extra day scheduled in for loitering around town.
Any suggestions are welcome.

Question for Mike Mahler
|
|
Mike i just watched your DVD tonight, extremely impressed watching you double sots press 32's. question about the double snatch; have you moved up to 48s on those? I just got my 48s this week, and one arm swings with those is more then enough work for now, the thought of throwing them over head is more then a few months away. just wondering if any one is doing that, and what sort of size/strength gains they reported? throwing 200+ pounds around has to have a massive anabolic effect on the CNS.

Glad you like the DVD and I have not tried double snatches with the 105s yet. No where near ready for that. Great way to get injured if you are not careful. I would work on Double Swings with the 105s. When you can swing them to head level you are going in the right direction.
For me to get the bells overhead via a snatch, I will have to squat under the bells a great deal. Basically, it will look more like an OL snatch.
Not one of my goals right now. I am working on a clean and mil press with the 105s. Once I have that down, I may think about a Double Snatch. Then again, I may not ;-)

extra
warmup 53lb kb bottoms up snatchx a lot and press L3x2, R2x2 right arm not good today fro some reason
double KB swing+seesaw press 53sx10+10,
double swing 88sx5 this has got to be the best sumo dl assistance move ever.
double swing+seesaw press 53sx5+5, 88sx5+5 will work this to multiple 10+10s before i step on platform in Miami
farmers walks 88s around yard

Science behind training duration?
|
|
I've always heard to limiting training sessions to 45minutes to an hour, but I've never either heard or remembered the science behind it. The reason I ask is because I just began volunteering as a JV football coach and they have the weight room open for 2 hours. With their program they should be out of there in 45 minutes or so, but I just started and don't feel like stepping on anyone's toes. So, what I started doing is a bunch of sets of 5 pull-ups, explosive pushups, bodyweight tricep extensions (since they have no dip rack) and sit-ups as I go around helping kids with their technique. After the first hour most of the kids start filing out and only the diehards, who for the most part have their technique down remain. I do 4-8 sets of heavy singles for the snatch, clean and press, and zercher squat then do either a typical 3lifts x 3sets x 4-8reps pressing, rowing, or squatting workout. I feel a little gassed by the end, but I think the heavy singles feel lighter following the slow paced, moderate intensity warm up with bodyweight lifts. Does anyone know the science behind the hour time limit or have any articles they could share with me? Thanks, I realize this is kind of a long post.

optimize T and GH levels. If your workouts deplete either hormone you are doing more damage than good. Hence why stimulus addicted trainees always have low T and IGF-1. My Dad who is 65 has better T levels than most men in their 30s( based on my online clients that get measured by doctors not me). My dad does not workout and is 20lbs overweight. Yet he has better levels than people that are working out. One key is that he does not stress out easily. Stress is a major killer of T levels. That is the devastating effect of overtraining.
If you feel weak and rundown after a workout, most likely T and GH went down. If you feel strong and powerful after a workout, it is highly likely that T and GH went up. It is often more complicated than this but you get the idea.
If you are actually putting in effort in a workout, you should not have the desire to go more than forty-five minutes.

Dbl KB Snatch Video
|
|
I just received my 2 32kg Kettlebells in the mail (Thanks again John and Co.) and was wanting to start using more double kb lifts. Yesterday I attempted the Crossfit WOD (30 snatches w/ 135lbs for time) and I decided to use the 144 lbs of KBs that I have. After the first five dbl kb snatches my form was pretty bad, so I cut down to one arm snatches. I read the very helpful post by Pavel on Dlb KB Snatches (that can be found here: http://www.dragondoor.com/kettlebells/news/archives/2005/09/master_the_doub.html
and found this video: http://www.londonkettlebells.com/cms/media/kettlebelltraining/terry/498
Is this example good technique? Is there an example of the classic "hard style" dlb snatch someone could recommend? Thanks

The guy in the video clip has great techqnique on Double Snatches and is using more of a GS corkscrew or wrap around technique. This is great for working up to heavy bells or for high reps. For added explosive power, I prefer to punch through and get under the bells in an explosive manner. Basically it is half way between a KB snatch and OL snatch. I demonstrate this version on my size and strength DVD which you can get here at DD:

Pavel & Mike Mahler, you'd never guess what happened to me at the airport Monday morning
|
|
I got out of the cab outside the terminal, got my bags out, and started walking into the building. A car behind me honked, and 2 ladies waved at me. I waved back, but then I noticed that they were waving me over.
One of them was checking a large suitcase, with which she needed help getting out of the trunk. I hoisted it out of the trunk, and she thanked me, commenting that she knew she was going to need help with it. She said that she had pulled up to the curb, saw me, and said...
"There's a man!"
Not that I ever doubted Pavel when he repeatedly commented, "You're becoming better men as we speak - including the ladies," but I didn't know the effects would be that immediate! Lol.
Both of you did an awesome job this weekend,
Jason :)

Well it was me and one of my students Eric Rivard that did the Clean and press gig. Eric did very well and knocked off 6 clean and Mil presses. I managed to complete 19 clean and Mil presses. It was a good time and $1260.00 will be heading to some non profit groups for the Katrina Victims.
The GS event was great and some very impressive numbers were put up by Catherine Imes, Marty, and of course Federenko and a host of other great athletes. Steve Cotter did a great job organizing and running the event.

Federenko is very very efficient and uses every technique trick in the book to get the weights from point A to point B in the most efficient manner possible. He is also a master of conserving energy after each rep and knows exactly how to pace himself to get the job done. No doubt he has incredible endurance and is a strong guy as well (he can jerk 2 70lb bells in one hand). However, when you see Federenko in action, the first thing that comes to mind is efficiency.

question for Mike Mahler

Hi there,
I used to be a raw vegan, (all my food was raw, nothing cooked). However , I lost a lot of weight, dangerously so, lost all strentgh and energy and was unable to do much walking let alone any exercise. I am now following a reasonably low carb diet with lots of meat. I have energy and the weight is back on, I look and feel human again. Only trouble is in my heart I'm a vegetarian. What do you think of the raw food diet, is it possible to be a raw foodist and still maintain strentgh and energy?? What do you find as vital for maintaining your strentgh and energy on a vegan diet?

Marie,
The rawfood diet tends to be extreme for many. The vegan diet is hard enough to follow and making it harder is not a great idea. Personally, I find that lots of protein and lots of healthy fats are critical for energy and well being. Many vegans and vegetarians make the mistake of discounting the importance of protein and fat and generally follow a high carb, low protein low fat diet. Big mistake.
if you try a vegan diet again, make sure that you get some protein shakes (pea protein isolate or rice protein) and make sure that you have protein and healthy fat at every meal.

ETKB
|
|
I got ETKB book today and have been enjoying it a lot. Thanks to Pavel and John Du Cane for an excellent product! I'm going to do the towel swing and the TGU with one of my 16 kg for a while, then eventually progress onto either harder exercises or the same two using my 24 kg. I'm pretty good with the swing, but having some issues with the TGU, since I never learned how to do it before ETKB.
I can get to the half get-up position fairly well, with the KB held vertically and I have my supporting arm fully extended. I'm having trouble figuring out how to stand up though - when doing a TGU with the KB in the right hand, I have my right leg bent back, and it seems like I need to figure out how to get my left leg underneath me so that I'm in something like a lunge position, but with the knee resting on the ground. It also seems like I have my arm twisted too much to keep the KB vertical as I try to stand, but I think experimenting with my grip when I start the TGU will help that.
Does anybody know where there's a link to see a video clip of a TGU that I can study, or have a word of advice? I only have the book, so I was hoping that if I saw it done in one motion, it'd make more sense. I have access to light dumbbells to work on the get-up with before trying with the 16 kg, just to figure it out. Thanks guys =)
