question for Mike Mahler about HOC
|
|
I really want to lean out, and this protocol sounds like a great idea, I just have a couple of questions;
I don't like to run, so I'm going to use a jump rope and my 24 kg KB,
if I wanted to do a boxing style workout instead, could I shadow box(I'm without a heavy bag)?
Second question, I'm really trying to boost my pressing numbers, but leaning out is really my main concern, could I still press and dead 3x a week, ala PTTP, or should I cut back on my heavy lifting frequency?

Combining that with kettlebells it the ultimate ;-) Just kidding, shadow boxing is fine and Bas Rutten has a great MMA workout DVD that would work very well with kettlebells as an HOC program. You can get it sherdog.com
If you want to get a lot stronger, having a goal to get much leaner at the same time is not the way to go. Pick one or the other and focus on that. How many powerlifters do intense cardio programs? You cannot have it all, all of the time. Deal with it. I would put your strength goals on maintenance mode (1 workout per week) and focus on three HOC workouts per week. Reduce your diet accordingly.

TNT cables - Mike Mahler

OK, I know you want to sell your new explosive strength and power DVD.
From your description, it sounds great and I hope you sell lots of 'em.
Can you reveal a couple of tips about using the TNT cables without giving away the farm? Like how to get it into position, feet position, etc.? I'll understand if you "just say no." Can't blame me for trying though.

Hey Preston, Just step in the middle of the cables and squat down and get one arm around each cable at a time to get them into position for pressing. Stand up and you will have the handles under your chin in a position that is similar to pressing two kettlebells. Now go buy the DVD ;-)

Attn Mike Mahler, question on an article you

Hi Mike,
I believe I was reading an article you wrote about a month ago where you mentioned some of your workouts. You talked about what you did to maintain and also an endurance swing set. The swing sets were something like 10 sets of 10, 15 or 20 whatever you could work up to.
Does this ring any bells?
I have been trying to find the post on DD, T-Nation, Bodybuild.com, your newsletters, but cannot seem to track it down.
If you can recall the article and it is yours can you post a link.
Thanks,
Rob

Opinion on Double Snatch....O.K. to drop for lock out or too risky? Trainers??
|
|
I did my first double snatch today....I do not have any "light" kettlebells so it was a mess that included 20 minutes of missed attempts before my body figured out I going all the way up!
On mikes tape he says dropping the bells from the top is not reccomended but bret jones says yes.
Hitting your leg from a clean with heavy bells would be almost as bad. Wanna get run over by a delivery truck or an SUV?
Just wondering what the consensus is.
Thanks?

to kiss your knees goodbye forever. Not a risk I am willing to take with 70lb bells and up. I have done double snatches for high reps with 2 53s before with a drop from the top on each rep without any problems. However for 70lb bells and above I prefer to bring the bells down to the shoulders first. If I were going to drop the 70s or 88s from the top, I would have to take a wider stance which is not ideal for power.

Hey Savannah, I prefer to bring the bells down to the shoulders on Double snatches as well when using the 70s or 88s, but it is not incorrect to do a full drop from the top. I actually prefer the full drop when I use lighter bells for high reps. It feels more fluid.

Question for Rif or Mike Mahler
|
|
Had a PR today doing side press's. after my ladders of Pull Ups totalling 100, I did side pressed with the BEAST today 15 sets of 2. I was so pumped!! I started out doing the side press with the 48 as a dare, but it felt great so I kept on going. When I got to my 8th set my biceps started to get sore when I would get into the starting position. Being the typical Gov't Employee I worked through it. Any suggestions besides the obvious of going back down in weight to either the 32k or 40k?

15 sets is a lot and not something you should do at every workout if at all. How about doing side presses with the 105 for 2-3 sets most of the time and then maybe once a month ramp up the volume. Also, just use the 105 once a week and use a 70 or 88 at the other workouts and work on technique as Rif suggested. Finally if you are going to do some high volume side press work, do so at the beginning of your workouts not after doing a lof of pull-ups.

The Zone
|
|
This is my third attempt with the Zone Diet. Prior to this attempt I hadn't really read all that I could have behind the reasonings of the Zone. Prior to this attempt, the other two times I was starving.
I decided that this time I would stick with the 3 block meals but up the protein block by 1. This seems to be working really well. Its only day 3 but I'm sure the lack of starving cravings will help me stay on it this time.
The goal for starting the Zone again is more performance based, although shedding 10 lbs wouldn't bother me, it isn't the driving force.
More food for thought, but any opinions are appreciated.
Thanks

Good call Pam. I think that uping the protein block by one will make a big difference.
the problem with the food blocks is that Barry sears does not take hand size into the equation. He states that you should have a protein serving equal to your palm. Well, what if you have really small hands? What if your hands are huge? People with big hands will do fine and people with small hands will starve ;-) I think that every nutrition program needs to be personalized to the individual. For example, you are a hard training athlete and need a lot more protein than the average person.
If you still find your energy lagging, I would increase the healthy fat (flaxseed oil etc) a bit and see if that helps.

Side press as a means of progression to a military press
|
|
Anybody use the side press as a means of progression to a standing press?
I've found myself leaning to the side when attempting a max military press. I've also noticed that as I've grown stronger, I no longer need to lean. That got me thinking that doing side presses with a 'bell too heavy to strict press, might be a good way to progress into a standing press. Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with something similar.
|
|
Answer
|
Mike Mahler: February 22 2006
|
|
Once you get the technique down, you can side press much more than you can military press. The side press allows you to use an extreme lean. As you get stronger, you can focus on pressing more and leaning less until you finally get to a strict Military Press. Works very well. If a trainee cannot side press a weight, he or she could bent press it, then move to the side press, and finally the mil press. Both the side press and the bent press teach you how to incorporate the lat into pressing which is critical for a strong Mil press.

ive started your 5x5 program out of your article on DD and i really like it, i was just wondering how long you suggest staying on it before switching the sets/reps? and if my goals are strength and tone with size secondary, would 54321 or another strength and tone only be a good scheme to rotate with the 5x5? thank you

I would stay on the program for four weeks and then do a light week and then switch to another program. Since your goals are stength and tone, try Pavel's 5x5x5 program or see my article on high frequency training at the link below.

Warming up before Kettlebell Training? Good? Bad?
|

Is warming up a good idea before starting KB workouts? I am really not interested in getting injured. or are there specific warm up excercises that are better than others?

Answer

If first thing in the morning or early in the morning, then 10-15 minutes of joint mobility work is a good idea followed by a few ramp up sets to get into the groove. If 6 hours or more after getting up, you probably will not need to warm up as much (Age, injuries etc are all factors). Personally, I do not warm up at all before workouts, but I do GTG with some drills during the say so I am ready to go when I get to the workouts.

I am looking to get some "expert" training, criticism, and pointers in the Long Beach, basically south bay area. I have been studying the RKC DVD by Pavel extensively, but I want to ensure there is not something I am missing. I also need some help formulating a good workout schedule to meet my goals.
Any people I should contact? websites? email addresses? any help is appreciated.
